I’m writing this note a few days before it will be sent to you, because I am leaving to spend a few days with a friend of many years. As I’m preparing for my trip, tying up loose ends at home and with Humanity’s Team, I ponder what friendship is.
A deep and true friendship is based on regard, honor, and support. But, most importantly, it’s founded on Truth, Oneness, and Love.
I acknowledge that, for some, friendship is kept at a surface level: playing or watching sports, bantering around the water cooler, socializing over a meal or drink, shopping, walking, chit-chatting at the neighborhood mailbox.
To me, this is simply surface interaction. Friendly? Yes. Fun? Sure, but not particularly deep.
True, deep friendship is what I have with my friend, Tom, who I’ve known for forty years now. Each year when we get together, we take things to the next level. We support and honor each other on the conscious journey, encourage one another into the deepening of Divine connection, and brainstorm ways we can be in higher service to others, to the planet, and to the universe at large.
My friendship with Tom rests on our awareness of the conscious journey, meaning we’re conscious of the steps we’ve taken and the steps we’re about to take. We have each other’s backs, but not in the sense of always saying what the other wants to hear.
In fact, a true friend will look you right in the eye and say, “I know your heart. And this thing you’re about to do is two steps back.”
When it comes down to it, a friend is one who builds you up with encouragement founded in love and truth.
We don’t always say what the other one wants to hear. And we never lower our own vibration to meet theirs when it rests in fear, anger, or judgment.
Instead, we offer the inspiration and invitation to be more courageous, more loving, and more aligned with our core of Divinity.
For what is true friendship with a brother or sister but a physical manifestation, a material representation of the only Relationship that truly exists?
This is our Relationship with the Creator of Reality, of which we are a Divine part.
In a poem from The Book of Soul, my friend and colleague, Mark Nepo, says this:
Together, meaning, truth, and kindness connect everything, forming a lifeline we can hold on to, no matter the storm.
When our relationships with one another are formed on the basis of meaning, truth, and kindness, and nurtured by the same, then we allow ourselves to be guided by and used for the higher purpose of Love.
True and deep friendship, then, is a tool of the Divine. Friendship is Love in Action.
In support of you on your conscious journey,
Steve
