Oneness: But What If We Are Not and Have Never Been Separated?

Saina Ghadiany • February 9, 2024

It had been a while since I had started constantly asking myself the questions of "Who am I? What am I doing in this world? What do each of our lives mean and what role am I to play in this collective life experience?"

Finally, one day while journaling, I received an image that made so many things clear to me.

I saw an ocean. A big, wide, limitless ocean. An ocean of energy and boundless consciousness.

Some call it God. Some call it the Universe. Some call it Source. After this visualization I thought, I will now call it the Ocean of Consciousness. And from this ocean comes us: you and I – each a droplet of the whole.

At various life points, each of us as a droplet in this ocean of consciousness, choose to come to this physical world as one entity, to experience this physical life for a while in some physical body or form. And then we return to the ocean when one life experience is over, ready for the next wave.

What matters most is that just like an ocean of water, there is no separation between the droplets of an ocean and the ocean itself, nor between the ocean and its individual water droplets.

It is all one. It is all connected. A droplet of the whole; able to connect and share knowledge and experience across all of its droplets.

This is how no action is separated; since its action from one of the droplets, each experience, each joy, each growth, and also each pain, gets across the whole, affecting every other droplet just the same.

We cannot be separated. We cannot be indifferent. And our growth, awakening, and transformation - deriving from each one of us - can benefit the whole just as much.

With this newfound image, it all made sense. Everything we are going through and why we are each individually in this world all seemed to become clear, knowing now that WE ARE not, AND HAVE NEVER BEEN, SEPARATED, having come to individually have a human experience while impacting the Ocean of Consciousness through our growth.

What is Oneness, and Where is the Concept Coming From?

Oneness, at its core, is the recognition that everything in existence is interconnected and interdependent. It goes beyond the surface-level distinctions that often divide us, such as race, nationality, or individual beliefs. It's an acknowledgment that, despite our diverse experiences and backgrounds, we share a fundamental essence that binds us together.

In a world that often emphasizes division and differences, the concept of oneness stands as a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness and shared humanity. Oneness is not merely a philosophical idea; it's a profound and transformative perspective that can enrich our lives and foster a sense of unity.

The History Behind the Concept of Oneness and Unity

The concept of oneness and unity is deeply rooted in various philosophical, spiritual, and cultural traditions throughout human history. While interpretations may differ across cultures and belief systems, the fundamental idea of interconnectedness and unity has been a recurring theme. Let's explore the historical development of the concept of oneness and unity:

Ancient Eastern Philosophies

Hinduism (1500 BCE - Present)

The ancient scriptures of Hinduism, particularly the Vedas and Upanishads, discuss the concept of Brahman, the ultimate reality that encompasses all of existence. The idea of Atman, the individual soul, being fundamentally connected to Brahman emphasizes the oneness of all beings.

Buddhism (6th Century BCE - Present)

In Buddhism, the concept of interconnectedness is central to understanding suffering and achieving enlightenment. The idea of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) suggests that all phenomena are interdependent, and realizing this interconnectedness leads to liberation.

Western Philosophical Contributions

Ancient Greek Philosophy (6th - 4th Century BCE)

Philosophers like Parmenides and Heraclitus in ancient Greece explored the nature of reality. Parmenides emphasized the unity and unchanging nature of reality, while Heraclitus spoke of constant change but also a hidden unity, introducing the idea that opposites are connected.

Neoplatonism (3rd Century CE)

Neoplatonism, particularly the teachings of philosophers like Plotinus, emphasized the concept of the One—a transcendent, ultimate source from which everything emanates. The One represents the unity that underlies all existence.

Monotheistic Religions

Judaism (circa 2000 BCE - Present)

The concept of monotheism in Judaism emphasizes the oneness of God. The Shema, a central declaration in Jewish prayer, begins with the affirmation: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one."

Christianity (1st Century CE - Present)

Christianity teaches the unity of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. The belief in the interconnectedness of these aspects reflects the oneness of the divine.

Islam (7th Century CE - Present)

Islam, like Judaism, is a monotheistic religion. The Islamic declaration of faith, the Shahada, asserts the oneness of God: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger."

Indigenous and Nature-Based Spiritualities

Indigenous Beliefs (Varied Timelines)

Indigenous cultures around the world often embrace a deep connection with nature and the belief that all living beings are interconnected. Many indigenous spiritualities emphasize harmony with the Earth and a respect for the unity of all life.

Modern Philosophical Movements

Transcendentalism (19th Century)

Transcendentalists in the United States, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, explored the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. They celebrated the idea that individuals could transcend material concerns to connect with a universal spiritual essence.

Humanistic and Existential Philosophies (20th Century)

Philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus explored themes of existentialism and humanism, acknowledging the interconnectedness of human experience and the responsibility individuals have to create meaning in their lives.

Contemporary Spirituality

New Age and Global Spirituality (20th Century - Present)

The New Age movement and various global spiritualities often emphasize the interconnectedness of all things. Concepts such as collective consciousness, holistic healing, and global unity have gained prominence.

The concept of oneness and unity has woven its way through the fabric of human thought and spirituality for millennia. It continues to evolve and adapt in response to cultural, philosophical, and spiritual developments, serving as a guiding principle that invites individuals to recognize the intrinsic interconnectedness of all existence. As humanity navigates the complexities of the modern world, the timeless idea of oneness remains a source of inspiration and a call to embrace unity in diversity.

The Illusion of Separation

The concepts of separation and oneness represent contrasting perspectives on the nature of reality, relationships, and existence. In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to fall into the illusion of separation – the idea that we are isolated individuals navigating the world on our own. Philosophically, the idea of separation suggests distinct boundaries and independent entities. It posits that individuals, objects, and phenomena exist as separate entities with defined borders. This idea of spiritual separation can have profound consequences on individuals and societies, impacting various aspects of life.

Social structures based on the idea of separation may lead to distinctions, hierarchies, and competition between individuals or groups. It can result in social stratification and inequality. It can also contribute to the polarization of communities, reinforcing "us vs. them" mentalities. This may lead to intolerance, discrimination, and conflicts between different spiritual or religious groups. In extreme cases, an emphasis on spiritual separation might lead to a rigid, dogmatic approach to morality, potentially fostering intolerance or exclusion of those who don't share the same spiritual beliefs. This other-based thinking may contribute to religious or interfaith tensions, leading to misunderstandings, stereotyping, and even conflict.

Moreover, the separation mindset may contribute to a view of nature as a collection of resources to be exploited for individual or societal gain. And most importantly, excessive spiritual separation may lead to feelings of isolation, alienation, or a disconnect from the broader community. It could potentially contribute to mental health issues if one feels detached from societal norms and support structures.

A perspective of oneness, however, challenges this notion, inviting us to see beyond the surface and recognize the threads that weave us into the intricate tapestry of existence.

Collective Consciousness and Oneness

Collective consciousness and oneness are interconnected concepts that explore the idea of shared awareness, interconnectedness, and unity among individuals or within a larger community. While these terms are often associated with spiritual and philosophical perspectives, they also find relevance in psychology, sociology, and various belief systems.

Collective Consciousness

Collective consciousness refers to the shared beliefs, attitudes, values, and knowledge that exist within a social group or society. It is the sum of individual thoughts, feelings, and experiences that contribute to a shared understanding or awareness.

Collective consciousness involves a common set of beliefs or ideas that are widely accepted within a group. It encompasses the norms and expectations that guide behavior within the group. It often shapes the cultural identity of a community or society, and individual members are influenced by and contribute to the collective consciousness of the group.

Oneness

Oneness is the philosophical or spiritual concept that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things. It suggests that, at a fundamental level, everything is interconnected, sharing a universal essence or source.

Oneness asserts that everything in existence is interconnected, transcending apparent divisions and separations. In spiritual contexts, oneness often implies a shared spiritual essence or consciousness that unites all beings, and it challenges dualistic thinking and encourages a holistic view that recognizes the unity underlying apparent opposites.

In various spiritual traditions, oneness is expressed through concepts such as the interconnectedness of all souls, the divine source that unites everything, or the recognition that separation is an illusion.

Relationship Between Collective Consciousness and Oneness

Collective consciousness involves shared awareness within a group, while oneness extends this idea to a broader, universal level, suggesting a shared awareness that transcends individual and group boundaries.

Collective consciousness can shape the behavior of individuals within a society, and oneness, when embraced, may foster empathy and a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of all beings.

While collective consciousness often pertains to cultural and societal aspects, oneness, particularly in spiritual contexts, goes beyond cultural boundaries and explores a deeper, universal connection.

Unity in Diversity

Both concepts promote the idea of unity in diversity, recognizing that despite apparent differences, there is an underlying interconnectedness that binds individuals and communities together.

In summary, collective consciousness focuses on shared awareness within a specific group or society, while oneness expands this idea to encompass a broader, universal interconnectedness that transcends individual and collective boundaries. Both concepts invite individuals to consider the impact of shared beliefs, values, and interconnectedness on personal and collective experiences.

The Benefits of Embracing Oneness

In a world that often emphasizes separation, oneness serves as a guiding light toward unity and connection. By cultivating empathy, practicing mindfulness, breaking down mental barriers, and embracing our interconnectedness, we embark on a journey that leads to personal growth and contributes to a more harmonious world. Embrace oneness, and let it be a source of inspiration as you navigate the intricate tapestry of existence.

The benefits of embracing oneness are numerous, some of which include:

1. Inner Peace

Embracing oneness can lead to a profound sense of inner peace as we let go of divisive thoughts and judgments. This inner peace becomes a foundation for resilience in the face of life's challenges.

2. Enhanced Relationships

Oneness fosters healthier relationships built on understanding and acceptance. By recognizing the shared human experience, we create space for authentic connections and meaningful interactions.

3. Global Harmony

On a broader scale, embracing oneness has the potential to contribute to global harmony. By transcending divisions and fostering unity, we can work together to address pressing global issues with empathy and collective wisdom.

Oneness in Practice

Understanding the importance and benefits of embracing oneness, we come to the question of “but how can we cultivate oneness in our daily lives?” Here are some ideas:

1. Cultivating Empathy

Embracing oneness starts with cultivating empathy. When we recognize the shared human experience, we can better understand and relate to others' joys, sorrows, and challenges. Empathy becomes a bridge that connects us, fostering a sense of compassion.

2. Mindful Awareness

Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and conscious breathing, can deepen our awareness of the present moment. By being fully present, we become attuned to the interconnected nature of all things, fostering a sense of oneness with the world around us.

3. Breaking Down Barriers

Oneness invites us to break down the mental barriers that separate "us" from "them." It encourages us to engage in open dialogue, celebrate diversity, and appreciate the richness that comes from various perspectives and experiences.

4. Environmental Consciousness

Recognizing oneness extends beyond human connections to encompass our relationship with the environment. A deep understanding of our interconnectedness with nature can inspire a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the planet we call home.

A Life Transformed

Cultivating oneness in my own daily life has tremendously transformed my approach to life, others, our environment, and also my own self-growth journey. Seeing myself as a droplet of the whole and remembering the impact that each of my thoughts, feelings, words, and actions could have not only myself but everyone else that exists has allowed me to become more aware and paying more attention to each. It is not only me who will be affected by my decisions; and so, I not only try to treat myself with more compassion and love, but all others as well.

I would love to know your thoughts on the concept of oneness and how it has affected your life and decisions.
