Oneness Mandala Reaches Berlin
Berlin, Germany May 15, 2009
Artist Russell Maier is passing through Berlin orchestrating the creation of a planetary collaborative art project. Russell is creating a grand mosaic Mandala out of 'Peace Portraits' from around the world. The project is taking him around the world by bicycle. In each county he invites people of all walks of life to help build a powerful statement of humanity's oneness.
The artist believes that : "By awakening the world to our Oneness, we can heal our divisions and make living together the joyful celebration we all want it to be." Maier also says, "Oneness is the one fundamental concept that more we grasp the more we undermine the injustices, poverty and other planetary problems that humanity faces today. The greater our consciousness of our interconnection the more equitable and sustainable become our ways."
Through his travels and the multi-lingual 1Mandala.org website, the artist invites contributions of 'Peace Portraits'. The artist asks that contributors to find a special moment to take a self portrait beaming peace to the world. These intentional 'peace portraits' of smiles and shining faces are united into a giant circular and geometric mosaic -- a mandala. Mandalas are an ancient circular and geometric art-form. They have been used by the world's spiritual traditions to raise human consciousness on grand ideas for centuries.
The 1Mandala project aims to build a grand collaborative mandala out of 10,000 peace portraits. The giant mandala will then be unveiled in front of the United Nations in New York City, on the date 10/10/10. The mandala of 10,000 people from all walks of life, countries and ethnic backgrounds, all united in the intention of peace, will be "a powerful statement of humanity's Oneness."
Russell left his home in Smithers BC Canada, in June by bicycle. He has traveled through Canada, the USA, England, France, Belgium and now is passing through Germany. As he travels from country to country the invitation to participate is translated into new languages and shared with individuals and organizations.
In his four weeks cycling through Germany, Russell has experienced much German culture, kindness and hospitality. "I have been overwhelmed by the kind, friendly and hospitable Germans that I have met in the countryside and in cities throughout Germany." His stories and encounters are shared on his art and travel blog. http://missive452.blogspot.com/
